The short answer: if a commercial, operations or technical leader needs to shape your 2027 season, the search should start this month. Agriculture runs on a calendar that does not wait for hiring. Budgets, distributor programs, product launches and trial plans are set over the winter. A leader who joins in late spring inherits those decisions instead of making them.
Work back from the first day in seat
A well-run retained search reaches an assessed shortlist within 21 working days of the briefing. A signed appointment typically follows three to eight weeks later, depending on your interview process and the candidate's notice period. We set out where that time goes in how long an agriculture executive search takes.
- Start in November: shortlist in December, appointment in January or early February and, for a US hire, a start date in February or March.
- Start in February: shortlist in March, appointment in April or May and a start date in late spring, after most 2027 plans are locked.
- Hiring in Europe: add contractual notice of three to six months for many senior roles. A search that starts in February can mean a first day in the second half of the year.
The question is not when you can afford to start the search. It is which decisions you want the new leader to own.
Why the fourth quarter works in your favor
The fourth quarter is when senior people take stock of their year. Strategy reviews, reorganizations and budget rounds give a good candidate a clear view of their own prospects. That makes them more open to a serious conversation than they will be in the middle of the season, when the field and the customer take all their attention.
It is also when compensation questions surface early. Many senior candidates are due an annual bonus soon after the year closes. A search that starts now gives you time to understand each person's position and build an offer that addresses it, rather than finding out at the final stage.
What slows a winter search down
The holiday period is the main risk. Interview panels scatter between Thanksgiving and the New Year and a strong candidate can wait three weeks for a second meeting. Hold interview dates for December and January on the day the search begins and agree who signs off the offer before you see the shortlist.
Three things to do this month
- Name the 2027 decisions the new leader must own and the date they need to be in seat to own them.
- Agree the success profile and the target companies before the search opens.
- Reserve interview slots through January and confirm the approval route for an offer.
If the role is in a country where you do not yet have a legal entity, Chaseman OnDemand can employ the appointee from day one so incorporation does not hold up the start date. To brief us on a 2027 hire, contact the team or book a 30-minute call.
