Retained or contingent search: which is right for an agriculture hire?

Contingent recruitment suits roles with many active candidates. Retained search suits critical hires where the right person is employed by a competitor and not looking.

The short answer: use contingent recruitment when the role has a large pool of active candidates and speed of volume matters most. Use retained search when the hire is critical, the credible population is small and the right person works for a competitor and is not looking. In specialist agriculture, most leadership, regulatory, key account and first in-country hires fall into the second group.

How the two models differ

A contingent recruiter is paid only on placement and is often competing with other agencies on the same role. That model rewards speed and the candidates who are already on the market. A retained search firm is paid in stages and works the role exclusively. That model rewards completeness: mapping the whole market, approaching people who are not looking and assessing them properly before you see them.

  • Contingent: no upfront cost, multiple agencies, active candidates, limited assessment.
  • Retained: staged fee, one accountable firm, the full market including passive candidates, structured assessment and a defined timeline.

Why agriculture leans toward retained search

Agriculture's specialist talent pools are small and well connected. The credible population for a country key account role or a global regulatory head is measured in dozens, not hundreds. Several agencies calling the same people damages your reputation in the market and most of the right candidates never apply to an advertisement.

If the right person is already employed by your competitor, an advertisement will not find them. A map will.

What to ask any search firm

Ask to see the target universe before approaches begin. Ask how many people were approached directly, how many were assessed and how the shortlist was chosen. Ask what happens if the appointment does not work out. At Chaseman Global every retained search carries our 12-month written guarantee: a free replacement search to the end of month three, 50% off the replacement fee to the end of month six and 25% off to the end of month twelve.
